30-Day Sketch Prompts
A prompt a day to keep you drawing
How to Use These Prompts
One prompt a day, 10–20 minutes. Short sessions done often beat long sessions done rarely.
Do your 5-minute warm-up first (lines, circles, pressure).
There's no "right" answer. Interpret each prompt however you like: realistic, cartoony, abstract.
Each week has a focus so your skills build gradually.
Use reference when you need it: real objects, your own photos, or free reference images you're allowed to use.
Share if you want, but don't have to. This is for you.
Missed a day? Just pick up the next one. Or double up on the weekend.
Each prompt includes a bonus challenge if you want to push further.
Week 1 — Shapes and Lines
Day 1 — Your morning mug. Draw the cup you drink from every day using cylinders and ellipses. Bonus: draw it from three angles.
Day 2 — A stack of books. Practice boxes in perspective. Bonus: make the stack lean dramatically.
Day 3 — Fruit bowl. Spheres and organic shapes. Bonus: cut one fruit in half and draw the inside.
Day 4 — Your shoes. Simplify into basic shapes first, then add details. Bonus: draw them as if they're a character with a face.
Day 5 — A houseplant. Practice flowing, confident curved lines for leaves. Bonus: draw it from directly above.
Day 6 — Keys or a small object, drawn huge. Zoom in on texture and detail. Bonus: fill the whole canvas with it.
Day 7 — Free choice: something you love. Use everything from this week.
Week 2 — Light and Shadow
Day 8 — A ball under a lamp. Highlight, core shadow, cast shadow. Bonus: add a second, colored light from the other side.
Day 9 — An egg on a table. Subtle, soft shading. Bonus: draw it cracked open.
Day 10 — A window at a certain time of day. Notice how the light falls into the room. Bonus: draw the same window at a different time.
Day 11 — Crumpled paper. Lots of small planes catching light. Bonus: use only three values.
Day 12 — Glass of water. Transparency and reflections. Bonus: add a straw or a slice of lemon.
Day 13 — Your hand holding something. Shadows between fingers. Bonus: draw your hand in three different poses.
Day 14 — A night scene. A street lamp, candle, or phone screen as the only light.
Week 3 — People and Creatures
Day 15 — 10 quick gestures. 30 seconds each, from reference. Bonus: draw the same pose as a stick figure, a mannequin, and a full figure.
Day 16 — Someone sitting. On a sofa, a bench, a café chair. Bonus: add the furniture in perspective.
Day 17 — A self-portrait in five minutes. Use a mirror. Don't aim for perfect. Bonus: exaggerate your favorite feature into a cartoon.
Day 18 — Five expressions. Happy, angry, surprised, sleepy, confused, on simple faces. Bonus: draw the same expressions on an animal.
Day 19 — A pet or animal. Start with circles and ovals for the body. Bonus: draw it sleeping and running.
Day 20 — A person doing their job. Chef, gardener, musician, barista. Bonus: include their tools.
Day 21 — Invent a character. Give them a name, an outfit, and a favorite snack.
Week 4 — Color and Mood
Day 22 — Sunset sky. Practice smooth gradients. Bonus: add a silhouette in front.
Day 23 — Limited palette: three colors only. Draw a simple landscape. Bonus: repeat with three completely different colors.
Day 24 — A cozy corner. Warm light, cool shadows. Bonus: add a cat or a cup of tea.
Day 25 — A rainy street. Reflections and muted colors. Bonus: one bright umbrella as the focal point.
Day 26 — Your favorite meal. Make it look delicious with color. Bonus: draw it as a recipe illustration with labels.
Day 27 — A dream or memory. Use color to show the mood. Bonus: use complementary colors.
Day 28 — Redraw Day 1. Draw your morning mug again, now with shading and color. Compare.
Bonus Days
Day 29 — Master study. Pick an artwork you love. Study how the artist handles one thing (light, color, or line) and apply it to your own original drawing. Keep studies private and credit inspiration if you share.
Day 30 — Your portfolio piece. Combine your favorite skills from the month into one finished illustration. Take your time.
